Okay, I'm sorry Ballard, but India Bistro used to be my favorite Indian Restaurant (and it is a delicious and delightful establishment), but I have found a new South Asian eatery to love.
Mayuri is next to Trader Joe's in a strip mall on 156th just north of Crossroads Mall.
They serve both Northern and Southern Indian cuisine, and I am in love with their Baigan Bharta!
Baigan Bharta is a sultry dish of roasted, smoky eggplant stewed with tomatoes and onions and of course the full compliment of traditional Indian spices. It is melt in your mouth good, creamy and delicious! Now I have to admit I am on a huge eggplant kick lately, but I think even non-eggplant-believers would be converted by this dish.
The other dishes they serve are marvelous as well, try the Chicken Curry. Our waitress was wonderful too. Seeing a table full of non-Indians she was helpful in encouraging us to try various things, not kill ourselves with spiciness and was very helpful in accommodating food allergies. When I ordered a veggie dish that was supposedly one of the hottest on the menu, she tried to steer me away from it, but after I insisted I love hot food she took my order. It came out spicy, but not terribly spicy (it was just right) and after getting her to admit she had told the chef to tone it down a bit I had to thank her. It was also great to see her enthusiasm and gratification when we gobbled up all the food that she had recommended.
Mayuri also has a Indian food market and a bakery/video store in another strip mall on 152nd near Microsoft. The traditional, vegetarian South Indian snacks at the bakery (not all sweets) are overly affordable and delicious and they also make great party fare.
So, as I said before, sorry Ballard, I don't think I will be driving 40 minutes to eat Indian food much anymore. But to all those who live closer than I do, do go to India Bistro, it is a lovely restaurant too!

Last of the Larry's
So, I know I haven't written in a while, but life is so distracting. It's hard to keep up with things like blogs when you come home from work tired and uninspired. But it's Sunday so I have no excuses.
I generally want to write about restaurants because I'm particularly into eating out and trying new restaurants, however I also like food that I can cook at home. That's why I want to talk about my favorite grocery store, Larry's in Redmond.
Larry's is right behind Redmond Town Center, just off Redmond Way, between Bartell Drugs and Cost Plus World Market.
As you probably know there used to be Larry's Markets all over the Seattle/Puget Sound area. Then they went out of business and most turned into Metropolitan Markets or Joe's Sporting Goods stores. But not the Redmond location...no, they got bought out by a northwest based grocery distributor co-op, and now Larry's looks and feels the same as it always did, but the prices have gone down dramatically!
They have a huge and fascinating produce section with better prices than anywhere else I've been. I love being able to find multi-colored cauliflower, asian pears and cheap avocados all in one place.
They also have a large selection of organic foods, artisan foods and imported specialty foods. Check out their great deals on Santa Cruz juices, or their excellent prices on naturally raised meat.
Their wine department is huge, and they usually have a wine expert standing in the section waiting to help you find what you need.
And finally, something I always look for at any business, the employees of the store seem genuinely happy, not fakey happy like at some stores. So if you are in the area, or you live relatively nearby go do your grocery shopping at the last of the Larry's.

Part of Downtown Bellevue that's not the Mall...
Today I decided to drive down to Downtown Bellevue, park, and go exploring. I parked at Bell Square because it's free and headed out in a northerly direction. There are a few little strip malls up in that area, and strip malls to me generally mean good, hidden gem restaurants.
There happens to be one restaurant in one of these strip malls that I've already been to, so I already know it's delicious. I walked by there today and peaked in the window and thought longingly of their food. The restaurant I am talking about is call Facing East. It's a Taiwanese restaurant and it would be hard to find if you didn't know it was there.
I went there with my parents about a month ago. They have a fairly small menu, but I'm pretty sure everything on it is amazing and totally different than any other food I've had. Their most well known dish is the "Pork Burger" which is marinated pork belly on a soft dumpling-like roll. With the pork belly are some pickled veggies, cilantro and crushed peanuts with sugar. It is an amazing combination, and it made me forget that I don't generally like fatty meats like pork belly.
They also have a wide range of noodle and rice dishes. My dad had a spice rubbed pork chop that was phenomenal, it had cinnamon, salt, sugar and chili on it in a kind of dry rub, very delicious, very different. We got a couple of dishes that were braised greens and garlic, the food was big on garlic! The braised greens with garlic and bacon definitely stand out in my mind, we didn't want those to end. I had a bowl of noodles called Horfun, they were much like Chow fun and I am assuming this is just a regional difference in name. Pretty much, to sum it all up, everything we ate was fantastic and I am planning a trip back very soon. You should all go check it out too! Their location is Bellevue Way and 10th right next to "The Studio", which is a kids art studio.
After drooling a bit at the doorstep of Facing East I continued on up the street and then decided to head East. I found a lot of restaurants and salons spread throughout the ground floors of all the new condo buildings, and there is so much construction there's potential for many more businesses. It will be interesting to see what's there in a couple years.
I happened upon the Doll Museum, which I knew about, but didn't know where it was, I'm going to have to go there some time when someone comes to visit that would want to go with me.
I walked by a couple places I am eager to try out, one is the new Danube Bistro. I believe it is a Czech restaurant, and I am very curious what that cuisine is like. The other place I will definitely go back to is Belvi, a coffee and tea shop. I read recently that they are in dispute with Starbucks because they would like to expand and Starbucks has some kind of deal set up where they get to be everywhere (apparently) and won't let other coffee shops come in. Well, Belvi was closed when I walked by, but I peaked in their window and it looks cozy, like a perfect coffee shop. It looked like they had some interesting teas and chocolates too, which is good, because I don't actually like coffee.
I checked out a few more new spots but the best part of my walk were the few little interesting vignettes I happened upon. Since I was out during the Seahawks playoff game there were hardly any other people out, and most of the businesses were closed, or probably should have been.
I walked by the window of a very swanky new restaurant and looked inside, and there was a waitress in uniform, sleeping on one of the booths, and who could blame her, it was a sleepy afternoon and no one was around.
I walked by a retirement/assisted living complex and looked in their windows, in one a very kind looking elderly woman, with an even older woman who appeared to be her mother, gave me a huge grin as she helped her mother put her coat on. In the next room, the dining room, a young Muslim woman with a head scarf was looking bored, head bent down, completely wrapped up in something she was reading, the dining room was empty and she must have been between shifts.
These little human scenes always catch my attention and I tend to enter into them like little stories and think about what the people in them are doing, who they are, what are their lives like, that kind of thing. These little scenes just make a common walk on a grey, quiet January Saturday more worthwhile.

Back from the RAC
I just came back from my first workout at the Redmond Athletic Club, or the RAC, (yay, I did it, I worked out!)
It's a pretty nice club, but I have one complaint, they need better lighting. They have overhead lights on really high ceilings and it makes the rooms feel cold, they should put up some wall sconces or floor lamps for ambiance. Even at the gym I'm a big stickler for ambiance! Other than lighting though the place was nice with flowers in the locker room, and lots of magazines to read, a huge climbing wall and a lot of workout machines. That last point is great because the last gym I went to had very few workout machines and you had to write your name on the white board for the machine you wanted to use and then wait your turn.
The RAC is located right next to Bella Bottega in Downtown Redmond, that area happens to be one I haven't checked out much yet, but there are lots of big buildings with retail space on the ground floor and I am just sure one of them is hiding the perfect tea and coffee shop to sit in, or perhaps the best unknown teriyaki in the neighborhood. I will have to go and have a look around when I have some free time.
I like downtown Redmond a lot, in general. It feels very cozy and small townish. There is still a downtown core area with some restaurants, shops and taverns. It feels like a bit of a frontier mountain town, like you would find in Montana (the western wear shop helps) and I like how there are train tracks running right through, it adds to the ambiance as it were.
My favorite place to go in downtown Redmond is Than Brothers Pho. I absolutely crave Pho all the time, and of all the Pho joints I've tried Than Brothers is the best (I know it's a chain, but it's a local, family run chain, so more power to them!). I think the Redmond location is the best of all the locations I've tried. For some reason the broth just tastes best to me there (I do like the location at Crossroads a lot too). I always order the veggie Pho, because I crave the fried chunks of tofu. Somehow, although it is fried, I can convince myself it's healthy because it's tofu. Anyhow, it's a really good and really affordable restaurant, so you should all go there! Oh, and they give you dreamy little bite sized cream puffs to eat when you're done...mmmm...cream puffs... I just had a really healthy dinner, and now I won't be able to get cream puffs off my mind all night, (sigh) oh well...
Ooh, I just remembered, I'm going to Than Brothers this weekend, oh boy! -Goodnight!

Welcome to the Eastside...
Well, this is my first post on my first blog, so here goes...
Having just recently moved to that vague area in the Bel-Red corridor, the one where no one is sure whether it's Bellevue or Redmond, but having spent a lot of time in the area before moving, I decided it was time for me to jump into the world of blogging. I decided that someone needed to start a blog to point out to those on the West Side and to any one else who cares to read this, that there are funky, entertaining, colorful, bizarre, cool and fascinating things on the Eastside of Lake Washington.
If you are not from the Seattle area I should first point out that there is Seattle proper (the West Side) and then there are all of the suburbs on the Eastside of Lake Washington (like Bellevue and Redmond) that have somewhat of a reputation for being, boring and corporate and some might say sterile, so it is my new mission to change this misconception and point out all of the really interesting things on the Eastside. Or, at the very least, to impart to people why I like the Eastside.
I also wanted to start this blog because there are an abundance of wonderful little "mom and pop" businesses in Bellevue and Redmond that do not get written about and are basically unknown. So, my secondary mission is to get the word out about some of the businesses I really like in the hopes that they will flourish and attract more small independents to the area. I LOVE independent businesses!
I am not going to talk about anyone in particular in this first post (I'm actually in a bit of a hurry), but there will hopefully (if I'm not lazy) be many posts forthcoming about the awesomeness of BEL-RED!
Now I am off to try out my new complimentary gym membership at the Redmond Athletic Club, perhaps I will say more about that establishment once I've been there myself.
Time to try to maybe start getting in shape, I think (you can tell I'm having a little motivational trouble).
